Packaging Advice

  • Pack all boxes as full as possible, before taping them securely at both the top and bottom.

  • Try not to make your boxes too heavy – the Yorkshire Van Man team are human after-all!

  • For curtain poles or tall thin items, tape them together. It speeds up the process.

  • Delicate items need wrapping. Keeping them loose is asking for trouble! Newspaper and bubble wrap are your best friends on moving day.

  • Try make things as flat or square as possible. For example, it will be much easier to pack a table that has had its legs removed.

  • If you are able to, use high-quality storage boxes or banana crates. Try to avoid using crisp boxes or cheap plastic tubs from supermarkets, as they tend to be extremely weak. If you purchase proper removal boxes, they will save you money in the long run as you may be able to flat-pack them and use them again.

  • The kettle should always be the last thing to pack away. You may need a brew!

  • Keep your underwear and clothing safely bagged up. Drawers have to be removed when the furniture item is heavy, so your undergarments may be on show!

On the day of your move

  • Try to free up a clear path from your stuff to the van, ensuring there are no trip hazards for the removal team. This is where a dustpan and brush or a door wedge can come in very handy!

  • Get all similarly shaped items next to each other. For example: boxes and square furniture; ironing boards and headboards.

  • Don’t forget your keys! Especially at the unloading site. Make sure there is someone available to open up the property at the destination to avoid the removal team having to wait for access – which could incur a cost.

  • Your removal team will really appreciate the offer of hot or cold drinks if you’re able to provide them. They will be doing heavy physical exercise, so any hydration on offer will make the day go smoothly. If you really want to be generous, we’re quite partial to a Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer!

Getting organised for your move

  • If you haven’t pre-arranged for any furniture to be taken apart during the removal, make sure you fully disassemble difficult-to-manoeuvre objects such as beds. This will help to make the removal as smooth and stress-free as possible

  • Un-plumb the washing machine, and put all removable pipes into the drum. There are often clips around the back of the washing machine to secure the waste pipe onto. But be warned: the washing machine waste water will need emptying out, which can be a bit of a smelly job! Try to empty the pipe carefully so it won’t spill onto anything or anybody.

  • Empty the fridge…those eggs will make a terrible mess, we can assure you!

  • Make sure you let the removal team know about all of the cargo before they starts loading; don’t be leaving out that delicate mirror until after the van is packed! Contrary to popular belief, delicate items do not go in last – they go in where they can be protected and secured, and not next to the “un-packable" items such as lawn mowers and bicycles.

Before your move

At Yorkshire Van Man we pride ourselves on offering a complete relocation service from start to finish, and we are here to support you through the entire journey of your move. Our pre-planning phase is crucial as it allows us to fully understand each client’s individual needs.

  • When describing your removal to us, be sure to mention everything – little insignificant things can turn out to be quite the opposite! Some items may require special attention. So it helps to fully explain exactly what you need moving.

  • Make sure we have access to properties at both ends. Does your office block or apartment have a lift? Is there on-street parking? Are permits required?

  • In some cases, it may be worth notifying your neighbours or the local council of your removal date, at least seven days in advance, to avoid any suspension costs.

  • We appreciate that this is an incredibly busy time, but try to be as organised as possible – it really helps speed things up. It’s amazing how the little things can knock hours off the length of a removal.

  • If you are moving on a budget, getting items downstairs or close to the door can help to save time and cost.

  • If you’re paying in cash, try to remember to withdraw funds before the job begins, so no last-minute trips to cash machines are required!
